As a mum I understand that taking good care of your baby is most certainly your top priority. When it comes to healthy baby sleep, safety precautions are just as essential as with anything else. According to Sids and Kids, an Australian organisation dedicated to research and prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), approximately 120 Australian babies still die each year from SIDS. It is the leading cause of babies within their first years of age and experts have linked it to unaccustomed tummy sleeping. Ensure your baby’s healthy sleep by following our 5 safety tips:
1. Sleep position – always on the back
It’s best to put your baby to sleep on the back, rather than on the tummy or the side. Their risk of SIDS is higher, when they sleep on their tummies, as this position puts the baby’s face in the mattress, which can cause suffocation. You can also use a baby sleeping bag, as it will encourage the right sleeping position and will keep your baby safe.
2. Choose a firm bed and avoid toys
Always put your baby to sleep on a firm mattress with a fitted sheet or a baby sleeping bag. Avoid placing any blankets, quilts and pillows, as well as stuffed toys in your baby’s crib.
3. Prevent overheating
Monitor your baby’s temperature at all times. Overheating increases the risk of SIDS, so make sure to choose light and comfortable sleeping clothes for your baby. To keep your baby warm, dress him or her in a onesie or use a baby sleeping bag.
4. Don’t sleep in the same bed as your baby
Taking your new baby in your bed might seem like a good idea, but it can actually increase their risk of SIDS. Your blankets and pillows present a safety hazard to your baby’s health. In fact, the safest place for your baby is their own crib.
5. Keep their face and head uncovered
Using loose bedding can cover the face and head of your baby and increase their SIDS risk. If you’re using a baby sleeping bag, the absence of loose blankets will minimize the risk of SIDS. Always place your baby on their back and use firmly tucked in covers. When putting your baby to sleep, check if their feet are positioned at the bottom of the cot and remove any head coverings, such as hats.
Keep your baby safe at night, and ensure healthy baby sleep. Baby sleeping bags are one of the safest sleeping clothing you can have for your baby. Sleeping bags from Sweet Baby Lilly are also low fire danger, an added safety benefit for your baby.
